West Brom vs CHELSEA: Preview

This evening’s game sees the bottom side in the league hosting top or second, depending on whether Liverpool pick up any points against Bolton. Chelsea should be looking to make up for their Carling Cup exit to Burnley mid-week although the way the squad’s going they could resemble more of a wounded pussy-cat than lion.

Chelsea captain John Terry suggests “We have to make sure we are at it, to be able to earn the right to play, so we need to battle and we didn’t do that in the week. One thing we did last week was bounce back from a big defeat and we need to do it again. If we can go there and frustrate their crowd and players, battle in the first five or 10 minutes and match them physically then nine times out of 10 we know when we start playing we are the better attacking team.”

On the injury front, Abdoulaye Meite (calf) could return for West Brom and midfielder James Morrison (back) is another in contention. Neil Clement (knee) however, remains out of the side.

For Chelsea, the missing list continues to grow, with Cech (leg), Alex (thigh), Juliano Belletti (ankle), Franco Di Santo (hamstring), Ricardo Carvalho (knee), Michael Essien (knee), and Joe Cole (hamstring) all out. Ashley Cole and Michael Ballack, although considered fit to travel, are likely to start on the bench.

KEY PLAYERS

WEST BROM

James Morrison is known to be quick out of the starting blocks and could catch the patched up Chelsea defence napping if they’re not careful.

CHELSEA

Nicolas Anelka was rested mid-week which might not have been the best idea as it turned out, and with Didier Drogba continuing to return to fitness, Chelsea could be relying on the Frenchman’s pace to trouble the West Brom defence.

CLUB FORM

WEST BROM

West Brom, with the poorest defence in the Premier League, have managed just one point from fifteen. They’ve already lost to Arsenal, Manchester United and in their last outing at Liverpool this season although won their last two top-flight games against London clubs. West Brom go into this game in 20th place in the Premier League.

They are also on the longest current run of 20 games in the Premier League since conceding more than a single goal in a game.Chelsea have the only 100% away record in England this season, they are unbeaten in 16 away games and they will go into this game looking for their forth successive win in the league.Chelsea go into this game either top or second in the league, depending on results earlier in the day.

PREDICTION

I don’t know why I bother with predictions because I’m usually way off the mark and far to pessimistic but anyway, I’ll have a go. After our game mid-week I think most predictions would point to West Brom being on the end of a bit of a backlash here. However, with injuries making Chelsea a little disjointed and way too much focus on the media circus that is Didier Drogba this week, their minds might not be as much on the job as they need to be. Chelsea could have a right battle on their hands and as strange as some might think it is, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Baggies come away from this game with something.
